Frederick Mali Honored with Billiard Congress of America 2009 President’s Award

Each year the Billiard Congress of America (BCA) recognizes an outstanding individual who has made significant contributions to the billiard industry with the presentation of the BCA President’s Award. This year the BCA has chosen to recognize Frederick Mali. Mali, who passed away at the age of 76 in 2007, was the president and CEO of The Henry W.T. Mali & Co., Inc. (Mali Cloth), the oldest continuously family-run company in New York City, founded in 1826.

“Fred Mali was a great ambassador for the game of billiards, as well as the most gentlemanly individual with whom I have ever done business,” said BCA President Ivan Lee. “I feel it is important to recognize a man who never had an enemy, made an indelible mark on his company and this industry, and always found time for anyone needing his assistance or support. Fred provided direction and assistance to many people in the billiard industry selflessly and willingly. The loss of Fred Mali to the billiard industry is difficult to accurately determine, but his eternal optimism and civilized manner would have been a guiding light in the troubled economic times that our industry faces today. I only regret that this recognition comes to him posthumously.”

Born in 1930 in New York City, Mali was educated at Buckley, Groton, Yale, and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. Mali also served his country in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in Paris, between World War I and II. He married Lucretia Obolensky Mali in 1979.

“Fred lived by the simple belief that a man’s word is his honor,” said his wife, Lucretia, who is also the current president of The Henry W.T. Mali & Co., Inc. ”He believed deeply that the only thing you have in life is your reputation, and so he rolled up his sleeves and worked non-stop to ensure Mali’s status as one of the leading companies in the billiards industry. They don’t make them like Fred anymore.”

Mali’s true love was using his engineering mind to improve systems and procedures at Mali and in the billiard industry overall. He personally developed many of the automated manufacturing equipment used to make the Mali Cue line of cues. He also was an expert craftsman with inlays for Pool Cues. Mali was also involved in the early days of organizing the Billiard Congress of America and the Billiard and Bowling Institute of America. Outside of billiards, Mali devoted time to arts and theater, helping design sets for numerous New York City theaters.

“I am eternally grateful to Fred Mali for the support he provided me during our 20 year friendship,” said Victor Stein, author of the Billiard Encyclopedia. “He opened many doors for me in the billiard industry—in the U.S. and throughout the world. And, as far as his reputation, Fred was a respected elder statesman in the billiard business.”

BCA Resumes Control of Men

BCA Resumes Control of Men’s Rankings and Communications
The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) today announced it will manage the men’s professional rankings system and player communications duties in its role as the North American representative to the World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA). Most recently these duties were handled by the U.S. Professional Poolplayers Association.
“The tremendous international expansion of men’s events in recent years has made it clear that the BCA needs to take steps to solidify the men’s professional ranking system,” said BCA Board President Ivan Lee. “We have grown from a single World 9-Ball Championship to WPA World Championships in 8-Ball, 9-Ball, 10-Ball and 14.1, and it is imperative that we maintain a ranking system that consistently allows us to send the best players North America has to offer to compete and represent our continent in these events.”
This decision was made after the BCA learned that an American pro event was conducted in direct conflict with the World 8-Ball Championship. The conflict resulted in players being required to choose between competing in the World 8-Ball event and losing ranking points or competing in the American event and sacrificing their opportunity at a world title.
“The BCA believes that the task of communicating with and assigning professional players to compete in international events is now so critical that they must have direct control of the process in order to take responsibility for it,” further stated Lee. The BCA has requested that AZBilliards, a leading source in pool and billiard news and information, assist with creating and maintaining the new ranking system. “AZBilliards, in partnership with the BCA, is helping to create a thorough, carefully planned player ranking process that will allow the BCA to provide the best possible representation from North America to the World Championship events,” concluded Lee. A follow-up announcement detailing the new ranking system will be released in the near future.

53rd Billiard Win for Putnam
Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour / Galesburg, IL

by InsidePOOL Staff
A star-studded field of 65 turned out in Galeburg, IL, to compete on the Viking Cue 9-Ball Tour over the February 23-24 weekend. Hosted by Billiards on Main, this event boasted over $4,000 in added money.

In addition to event winner Putnam, players included James Baraks, Jon Kucharo, Eddie Balderos, Neal Jacobs, Scott Cohen, and Craig McLaren. Also, Jackie Palmer came out to compete. Palmer took Putnam under his wing when he was around 17 and practically let him live at the poolroom he owned, New Castle Billiard Club. They worked on Putnam’s physical and mental game for years until Palmer decided that Putnam needed to go on the road.

When the smoke cleared on Saturday night there were four players left in the winners’ bracket. Putnam bested Baraks 7-5, while McLaren sent Palmer to the west side 7-3, setting up the hot seat match. Before McLaren knew what hit him, Putnam opened up to a 4-0 lead. A dry break gave McLaren the chance to run a rack, but in the blink of an eye, Putnam had notched a 7-1 victory.
In the left side of the chart, Baraks was staging a comeback, ousted Scott Laird 7-2 to deposit him in fifth and then going on to deal Ivan Sweezer a donut 7-0. Faced with a disheartened McLaren in the semifinals, Baraks again did not disappoint, besting his opponent 7-3 to advance. The finals were hard fought, and the players traded racks back and forth until Baraks finally missed a ball, and that was all Putnam needed to press his advantage and win the match.
Results:
1st Shawn Putnam
2nd James Baraks
3rd Craig McLaren
4th Ivan Sweezer
5th Jackie Palmer
Scott Laird
7th Dave Tenley
Scott Cohen

BCA Revamps 9-Ball Championships
New Look, Name, and Format Aim to Better Promote Sport
The Billiard Congress of America (BCA) announced it has enhanced its 9-ball championship event for 2008. The name of the event has also been changed to the “GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships.” GenerationPool.com is the new BCA consumer website slated for launch in early 2008.
For the first time, the 2008 GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships will be held in conjunction with the International Billiard Home Recreation Expo, June 12-14, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The tournament’s semifinals and finals events will take place June 11-12 in the Grand Ballroom at the Charlotte Convention Center.
“We wanted to produce a standout event and we knew that we would need to change the look and feel of our tournament to achieve this goal,” said BCA President Ivan Lee. “We will be changing the arena, the format, the production techniques, and the environment of the tournament in order to highlight the professional level of play that will be taking place. The players will be treated to a first-class event in an upscale playing environment.”
Further, ESPN is committing more time to showing the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships on ESPN and ESPN2 in 2008. After speaking with ESPN about the innovative changes developed for the tournament, they were thrilled to add two additional hours of programming for the event, meaning the event will air for a minimum of six hours. These additional hours of airtime will add more than 30% of first-run coverage shown on television.
“ESPN is pleased to cover three hours from both the men’s and women’s GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championship events in 2008,” said Nick Dawson, associate program manager for ESPN. “The event is one of the marquee billiard events in the world each year and the added hours will allow viewers the opportunity to enjoy both semifinals and the championship from each division, along with additional tournament competition.”
The arena will include reserved VIP seating, inclusive of upscale leather chairs, cocktail tables, and stadium seating, creating the ultimate viewing environment. The event will also feature a VIP hospitality area with all-inclusive food and beverage service, early access to the arena, and a high-end hospitality area. The new championships will provide a visual backdrop for television that promotes the game in a first-class, appealing format.
The 2008 event will continue to feature a men’s and women’s division. Both divisions will begin with 32 players on Monday. The semifinals that will take place the evening of Wednesday, June 11, and Thursday, June 12, will consist of the men’s and women’s finals. Both events will begin with a VIP reception.
In an effort to keep the linearity of the Women’s Professional Billiards Association (WPBA) tour, the women’s event will begin with 64 players June 6-7 at Smokin’ Cue, which is located at 10901 University City Blvd. in Charlotte. Once narrowed to 32 players, the event will move to the Charlotte Convention Center.
“The WPBA fully understands and supports our desire to redefine our event,” said Lee. “But they requested that we allow them to keep the field size from years past. Faced with our constraints in time and location, we worked cooperatively with the WPBA to arrange an off-site start for the women’s side of the event so that they can deliver 32 players to the start of the event on Sunday night. The willingness of the WPBA to work with the BCA to resolve this issue illustrates a new spirit of cooperation in our industry.”
Tickets for the GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships can be purchased by phone beginning March 31, 2008, at 9:00 a.m. EST. Information on ticket prices and the phone number to order tickets will be announced in March.
The BCA will also be inducting its fifty-second member into the BCA Hall of Fame during the intermission between the men’s and women’s GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships final matches on Thursday, June 12. This exclusive ceremony will take place in the main arena and will continue the long tradition of recognizing and paying tribute to the world’s greatest billiard players and contributors.
“Hosting the 2008 BCA Expo, the new GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships, and the BCA Hall of Fame induction ceremony all in close proximity will allow many facets of the industry the opportunity to reconnect with each other.” said Lee. “The week will truly be a celebration of billiards.”
