Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Wilmington, NC by Lea Andrews Jeff Abernathy, who last won a Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour stop in February, put another notch in his belt the weekend of July 11-12, going undefeated to take first place. The $1,000-added main event, which was competing with the Gem City Classic and the WPBA Satellite Tour for players, drew a small but strong field of 15 players to Break Time Billiards in Wilmington, NC. Abernathy arrived in the hot seat match after sending Zach Wilson west 7-4. Challenging Abernathy for the hot seat was Larry Faulk, who’d edged past Chris Vollmar 7-6. There was no edging past Abernathy, though, and Faulk moved left 7-2. On the one-loss side, Jay Calhoun came up short in his hill-hill match against Trey Greene, while David Tickle fell 7-4 to Sidney Champion and Peaches Fuller and Scott Crandall each fell 7-3 to Younger Chapman and Barry Irving, respectively. Chapman and Irving went on to their own decisive match, which Chapman took 7-2, while Champion knocked out Greene 7-3. Chapman then proceeded to welcome Wilson to the one-loss side with a hill-hill knockout, while Champion did the same to Vollmar, setting up [...]

Stop five winner Kelly “Kwikfire” Fisher made her second appearance on the tour, toting Ron Park along and showing him that you don’t have to be female to win on this tour. Fisher and Park joined twelve other Jack and Jill teams for the $1,000-added Scotch doubles 9-ball event at Randolph’s Billiards in Hickory, NC. Fisher and Park made their way steadily through the field to arrive in the winners’ side final four, where they met “Jumping” Janet Atwell and her playing partner, Harold Ewing. Team Fisher sailed past Team Atwell, sending them west with a score of 7-1 and moving on to the hot seat match to face Norwegian champ Line “Rockstar” Kjoersvik and her partner, Steve Dyer, who were coming off a 7-5 win over Aimee Kilby and Clint Clark. The tight match went hill-hill, but the final 9 belonged to Fisher and Park, and Kjoersvik and Dyer went to the left side of the bracket to try to fight their way back. Over on the one-loss [...]

Single-Game Final Falls to Moore J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Charlotte, NC by Skip Maloney Steve “The Knife” Moore came back from a hill-hill hot seat match defeat to take a single-game final against him at the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour’s May 3 stop. The $1,000-added event drew a field of only nine entrants to Paradise Billiards in Charlotte, NC. After an opening round that elicited a winners’ side final four, Moore initially met up with Mike Davis as Park squared off against Dugsy Norris. All three matches that left Park in the hot seat were hill-hill affairs, with Moore over Davis, Park over Norris, and ultimately Park over Moore. On the one-loss side, Katie Cowan and Jeff Abernathy were there to meet Davis and Norris. Davis got by Cowan 9-2, as Abernathy bested Norris 9-5. Davis then dropped Abernathy into fourth place and had a shot at Moore in the semifinals. Moore advanced back to the finals with a 9-7 win over Davis. Moore and Park decided to bypass the scheduled race to 11 and make it a single-game contest for top prize, which didn’t work well for Park. Moore broke the rack, ran the balls, [...]
